ZuYan, where are the cards?

ZuYan wanted to flash the card to me, imitation though.
So I sat and he flash but I walk away after awhile and let him work on his own.

Later, I found that three cards are missing.

This is the fun part.
I cannt get mad at him every time I found something missing and I don't expect to find it by asking him "ZuYan, have you seen ...?" or "ZuYan, where is ...?"
Sometime he will surprise you. He did know what are you looking for and where it is.

This time, he saw me picking up the cards from the floor, he came and help.
When I though I have pick up all the cards, he pulled out one card from underneath of wardrobe.

After big hug and thank you then I found two cards are missing.
Where else? It must be underneath the wardrobe.
The wardrobe is too heavy to be moved.
Make two more new cards!

Light and easy

Emm.. the progress of the reading has been slow and easy, if compared to what is stated in the book "How to teach your baby to read".

In the book stated, start with 5 words and add in 5 words each day up to 25 words. Then drop the oldest word and add in new words start with 1 word and up to 5 words each day.

I have been slow or "WE" have been slow.
With the in and out household works, my freelance works, meal time, shower time, nap time, playtime. We actually left not much time. And, since the timing, the mood, the ambience when the cards are flash are important, One day we could only do 1 group of words.

Finding the right time is crucial. If ZuYan's does not shows any interest when I hold the cads and ask "Want to play the word game?". I will not do it. On certain day, we did not do the cards game at all.

Introduction of reading card

Today I really want to kick off the reading card, not one langugage but three languages.
Flash English follow up with Mandarin. 5 words each. Rest at least 30 minutes before flashing Bahasa cards.

ZuYan shown good respondence. He wanted to look at the card again and again.
I guess, for him it is something difference from the dots card.
After flashing the cards, he wanted to hold the cards and point to the words.
This is the main reason why I wanted to do the reading so much.
Through observation he likes to point at words and waiting for me to say the words. So I think this is the best time to introduce the game.

I did not forget what I read.
End the game before he lost his interest, but if he is not allowed to hold the cards to point and look at it, I think he will cries as his desire is not meet and the game will ended with a unplesant moment

The introduction of this game has meet his needs.

Good! We are doing the flash card session at grandma's place.

I think ZuYan is quite familiar with grandma's place environment and feel pretty secure to do anyting as usual as at home.

For some unknown reason, Zuyan is not paying attention during flash cards session again.

Maybe, I did not flash fast enough.
In fact, I am slow in flashing 5 cards in 5 seconds. I took 8 seconds.

So, I had tried flashing 4 cards now 3 cards only.

At least, he is watching during flashing session.

ZuYan is into it

ZuYan was sitting down waiting for the card to be flashed.

I think he is waiting for the moment to be hug.
Sometime stand up after 2, 3 cards are flash and wait for the moment to be hugged.

It has been a week.
Doesn't seems to grab the techtique to catch ZuYan's attention yet.

He is looking else way after I flash 2 cards.
I guess I am not fast enough to grab his attention.

Not that easy to find the right time!

Huh! It is not as easy as what I read in the book " ...start with 5 cards then add on...then addition...subtraction...three months later..."

It is so easy when I read through the lines.
It is not easy to find the right time to do the game.

ZuYan is a toddler! He is in his subconcious stage.
Well! keep trying.

Introduction of Maths cards

We started the Maths cads today.

ZuYan wanted the cards from me after I flash the cards.
As mentioned in the book, end the game before the child lost the interest.
So that he will wanted to do when we do it with him later.

I let him hold the cards and look at it at the same time I divert his attention to something else so that I can keep away the cards.

Getting ready to start

With the card and dots in hand, I have reread the book "How to teach your child maths." to make sure I start it right at the begining.

Rereading the book gave me a feel of pressure again. The program has to be carried out continuously and consistently. And another "wow" again at how fast the whole program progress if done correctly.

Start with flashing dots card 1-5 on first day, then add another 5 cards on second day. On the sixth day, replace the oldest cards dot 1 and 2 with 11 and 12, and carry on the same by replacing 2 old cards with 2 new cards everyday.

When you reach dots card 20 about 2 weeks time, you are ready to intoduce "Additional". Start with the less dot comnbination and within the dot card than you have flash.

After 2 weeks of introducing additional, subtraction is the next concept to be introduced. After 2 weeks of introducing subtraction, multiplication will be introduced. After 2 weeks of introducing multiplication, division will be introduced.

Can you see that, from start to division, it will take about two and half month.

After two and half month, the child would had grab all the concepts? By then ZY will be 17 month old. Amaze!

I really would like to see what will happend about three months time.

DIY Glenn Doman Maths cards

Sourcing, sourcing, sourcing ...

So I must start now, do it, do it, do it.

I bought a piece of blank card 21"x31" at Popular cost RM1.2o. Then came home found out that if were to follow the standard in Glenn Doman's "How to teach your baby maths." I can only cut 1 piece of 11"x11" card out of one big piece of card. If were to reduce the size to 10.5"x10.5" I can get 2 pieces(pcs). For the whole program I needed about 211 pcs. That will cost me around RM128.00. Excluded the cost of labour. For dots, I survey in Tesco and Jusco, results are 600dots per pack cost RM3.90. I needed at least 5050dots. That will cost me RM35.10 for 9 packs. Total cost for Maths program only is RM163.10.

Thinking about cutting the 211pcs of cards, I am not sure how long do I have to take and do I have the time to cut. I might only be able to cut 1 or 2 pieces per day. I stop and wonder, looking around for sometime and finally, finally I got the DIY Glenn Doman Maths cards cost less than RM100.00 cheaper than what I calculated above. Forget about the cutting, now I only need to do the pasting of dots.

After 8 months, I have decided to introduce Glenn Doman flash card method to ZY.

It was 8 months ago, when ZY was 4 months old, I sat and listen to a sales person promoting Glenn Doman method. I heard about Glenn Doman method before ZY's arriving but never look into the details. I feel a bit late to start the program with ZY after the session. I am a very budgeted person, I will do things that I am able to by myself. I feel a bit late because I can prepare the material by myself, cutting, pasting dots, writing the numerals, that is easy. But it needs time which I can hardly find time to do any extra things other that daily routine work with ZY around.

The desire, the thought to introduce the program to ZY was pending till one day I realised if I don't do it now, I could never be able to do it anymore. Because ZY is growing too fast, too fast for me to catch up with him. Everyday there are surprises.

It happend when ZY woke up in one day morning and walked to the shoe cabinet then took out his shoe that I bought him the night before. I show him where to keep his shoe once and close the cabinet. That's it. And he remember!
